Life Saved #3560

On February 7th, 2025 and 81-year-old man choked on an egg sandwich causing a total obstruction. Protocol was followed. LifeVac successfully dislodged the blockage on its third attempt. The man’s daughter describes the incident as follows:

“My dad was eating an egg sandwich and kept taking bites without swallowing. We just happened to look over and saw him turning red. I realized he was not breathing and had a blocked airway. We used the LifeVac a few times and partially dislodged the food. We called 911 while alternating doing the Heimlich and using the LifeVac. He was just starting to lose consciousness and was blue when we fully dislodged the food, which was moments before the EMT’s arrived. The EMT’s and the officer that responded that night were impressed. I bumped into the officer the other day and he says he now carries one in his patrol car though he hopes he’ll never need to use it.

My dad is doing well now considering. With his Alzheimer’s he forgets most things pretty quickly so on one hand it’s great that he doesn’t remember the incident, on the other hand it’s not so great because he can’t remember to be careful when eating; nor does he appreciate it when I try to get him to eat and drink more slowly. But it’s ok, I don’t mind him yelling at me because at least I know he’s breathing then! I’ve been showing all of our caregivers the LifeVac and they’re all super impressed and have started suggesting to other clients that they too have one on hand. Again, had I not had it I really don’t think I would have been able to save him on my own. Thanks so much for making the LifeVac and thanks for reaching out to see how he’s doing.
